Gordon Parks was a celebrated photographer and filmmaker whose work had a profound impact on the art world and American culture at large. Though he was well-known for his contributions to the fashion industry, Parks also used his lens to capture the realities of racism and social inequality in America. As a photographer myself, I have found inspiration in Parks' work and his commitment to storytelling through images. In particular, his ability to convey the meaning of a moment through his photographs has influenced my own artistic journey. My admiration for Parks led me to create my own photo spread, "FOCUS," which sought to emulate the feeling of turning pages in a book. Through this work, I aimed to tell a story and evoke emotions, much like Parks did in his photography. It was an honor to have "FOCUS" recognized with an ADDY award at the 2020 American Advertising Awards, and I am grateful for the legacy that Gordon Parks left behind as an artist and storyteller.
